Olivier Chupeau
While absent-mindedly watching TV at home, I noticed two objects on the coffee table: a copper weather strip and a pair of sheet-metal scissors.
During the commercial, however, I became more intrigued by the spare objects in front of me: the cutting plier and my own two hands. Even more intrigued, I made rules for myself: using only a single strip—while cutting, bending, and plying.
To my surprise, I discovered that I was creating metal origami.
As the TV broadcast ended, suddenly—almost magically—the simple swirl of metal became a menagerie of flying and earth-bound creatures.
That was some years ago. Today the flying creatures are suspended under the ceiling heating vent, actually flying in the air current.
Recently, because I could not find copper weather strip, I used wide aluminum roll flashing—still with the same origami rules—only a single strip.
The wide strip has some advantages. It is wider but also lighter. The resulting sculptures are more airy and bright. Volume and shape have allowed my imagination to explode.
