Domain name, hosting, e-mail address, site-setup, site maintenance: which are the costs?

What is a domain name?

A domain name is the web site address of your business that is easy to remember, such as "yourHomeDecor.com".

Just like you would have a street address in the physical world, you have a web address in the digital world. That web address is how people will find your business or service, and without it your site could not exist on the web.

Should I have a domain name?

A domain name gives your business its own identity on the web. Your web address can be a valuable brand name for you. You want people to remember your web address and use it on a regular basis.

How can I reserve my domain name?

Getting a domain name involves registering the name you want through a domain name registrar. For example, if you choose a name like "example.com", you will have to go to a registrar and verify that this domain name - "example.com" - is available (not already registered).

If this domain is available, you will pay a registration fee that costs around $10 to $35 for that name. That will give you the right to the name for a year, and you will have to renew it annually for (usually) the same amount per year.

Note that Les Jolis Tresors is not a Registrar.  We will not be able to register your domain name.  But we can give you advice on how to choose the best offer (see also here).

Will my site be automatically associated with my domain name?

No. You have to link your domain name with the effective location on the Internet where your site is hosted. This is usually done for you, by either your registrar or the hosting service you have chosen for your site. But, in either case, you will not have a good control of this process which can become problematic for you in the long run. For more information on this subject, click here.

If you order a website from us, though, our training will teach you how to perform this linking yourself so that you will be able to change your site or your hosting location whenever you want. This allows you better personal control over your site.

I already have an email account with Google (Gmail). Do I need to create a Google account for my site?

No you don't. You already have a Google account which was automatically associated with your Gmail address when you signed up for Gmail.

Your Google Account is free and allows you to use many Google services, like Google Docs and Google Sites.

To see the other Google services such as Google Docs or Google Sites, log into your Gmail account and look to the menu on the top left of the browser window. There you can browse through the services Google offers other than Gmail.

I already have an email account with a provider that is not Google. Can I open a Google account and keep my present email address?

You don’t have to use a Gmail email account – you can use your Yahoo email, Hotmail, AOL mail, the email address your Internet provider gave you, or any other address to create your Google account. This means that you can use Google Sites, Google Docs and other Google services, while keeping your current email address.

What is the difference between Google Docs and Google Sites?

Google Docs is a set of free tools to create, update and share documents online. These documents are similar to MS-Office files: texts, spreadsheets and presentations.

Google Site is a free and powerful environment to create and share Web pages.

If you build a website for me, where will this website be hosted?

This website will be hosted on Google servers, with no fee for the hosting. It will be part of your Google account and you will have full control over it. As with any similar service, you will have to accept and comply with Google Site Terms.

Will Les Jolis Tresors own rights over posts?

Les Jolis Trésors will not own any right over the content of your web site.  You specify the content and we build the site for you as part of your Google account. You own all the rights – and are also responsible for the content you post.

My registrar also offers to host my website; Is that not the easiest way to set up my web site?

All registrars offer additional services beyond the domain name registration.  Quite often these other services are subject to a fee, and this is always the case with a hosting offer, whereas the hosting you get with Google Sites is free.

Besides, if you use Google Sites to host your website you have to accept the hosting provided by Google.  Again this hosting is free and, as of September 2010, provides you with up to 100 megabytes of storage for your web pages.  As an example, one of our sample sites, an artist site with 13 galleries uses only 38% of the 100Mb quota.

BACK to question list

Which url should I give to those who wish to visit my website?

If you purchased the domain yourname.com, you will be able to give either www.yourname.com or http://yourname.com.  This is why you should think carefully about the domain name you are going to select: it will be your brand.

You will also be able to define subdomains such as http://products.yourname.com, http://services.yourname.com and have these subdomains point to specific pages of your website.

If you don’t know how to specify and link subdomains, we will be able to help you with that in our training sessions.
